Highlights of the Week!!!

In reading this week, we continued to work on our unit on Eric Carle.  We learned all about Eric Carle and we watched a video showing us how he made his drawings in his books.  We worked on parts of a story. ( characters, setting, problem and solution) We read many books by Eric Carle and we made an attribute chart putting each book on the chart.  We learned about repetitive language and we picked out repetitive language in a book.  We had Dr. Bonasera come in and read The Very Hungry Caterpillar to us and after  he read the story he did a math lesson with us based on the story.  We wrote about our favorite part of the story and we made a connection to the story The Grouchy Ladybug.  We wrote about a time we were grouchy.
We continue  to work in our reading groups and we are reading books.  We are also blending sounds together to form words.  Soon you will be receiving book in the bags where the children are reading to you.

In phonics we continue to practice our sight words.  We also worked on decoding and encoding short vowel words.

In math, we learned how to use a calculator, we learned how to play Top-IT, we used a pattern block stencil, we practiced interrupted counting. We also practiced addition. We have been working on addition problems every day. We also learned a game where we roll the dice and count up the dots and record it on a spreadsheet.

In social studies, we learned about Dr. Martin Luther KIng Jr.  We talked about him and we watched a video on him.  We also read a book about him.  We colored many beautiful pictures about Dr. King and we wrote about what our dream was for the world.
We also made New Years' Resolutions.

In writing, we made marshmallow snowmen and we wrote about the steps we take in building a snowman. ( First, Next, Then and Last.)
